A coffee and sandwich chain with over 400 locations worldwide will be launching their initial Garden State presence soon, as Joe and the Juice is coming to a Hoboken storefront.
Signage has officially gone up at 216 Washington Street at the former home of Cheap Maggie’s for the business, which won approvals from the city’s Historic Preservation Committee last month. Jersey Digs had previously reported on a Naya Middle Eastern Counter slated for the property last year, but the plans fell through.
Joe + The Juice was founded in Copenhagen in 2002 by Kaspar Basse as a café and juice bar that was run out of a clothing store. The brand has locations in Manhattan, but none in New Jersey so far.

The high-end cafe chain specializes in juices, coffee, and flatbread sandwiches, with their “tunacado” going viral several years ago. It features whipped tuna salad on a flatbread with avocado and tomatoes, one of several sandwiches available on the menu.
Joe and the Juice has not announced an official opening date yet, but this stretch of Washington Street is in the midst of a bit of a transition period. The building that housed Aspen Marketplace down the street was recently sold, while a Bluemercury outpost also shuttered last year.
However, a Sweetgreen did recently open on the block, and the stretch will be getting even more retail, as a new development under construction at 301 Washington Street is set to feature five new storefronts.
