A year ago, David Bowie celebrated his 68th birthday with the release of his stunning album Blackstar, succumbing to cancer two days later. He left behind him a remarkable legacy that transcended the world of music, and made an indelible impact on modern culture itself.

Sunday, January 8th would have been his 69th birthday, and Jersey City restaurant, bar, and art gallery LITM will honor his extraordinary life with their third annual David Bowie B-Day Bash. Heroes, a five-piece Bowie tribute band from New York City, will headline a celebration of art, music, food, and drink with a free concert.

Heroes goes “Station to Station” with selections from every part of Bowie’s shape-shifting career, from Ziggy Stardust to Berlin, from the top of the charts in the 80s to the groundbreaking experimentation in the latter decades of his career. They’ll take the stage at 7 pm.

After the concert, you can stick around for a Bowie “Let’s Dance” party. Browse Bowie-inspired gear from designer Love, Liesel and other local merchants, and get into the spirit with lightning bolts and blackstars for your face courtesy of makeup artists Colleen and Nicole.

Modern Love, Sound and Vision and Space Oddity are all great Bowie tunes…but also delicious drinks!

And speaking of spirits, there’s an array of Bowie-themed cocktails for “Young Americans” to enjoy. The Goblin King is made with Brockman’s gin, lemonade, and crème de menthe, while the Space Oddity contains Stoli Blueberi vodka, blue curacao, and pomegranate juice. Or, be a Blackstar with a shot of aka Van Gogh double espresso vodka. LITM’s full kitchen will be in action as well, serving new American fare.

Mia Buchanan’s solo show ‘Utopia’ will be on display at LITM

While you’re there, check out LITM’s January art exhibition. Utopia is a solo show by Mia Buchanan, whose bold, playful, and experimental art was influenced by her studies both in Japan and at New York’s Parsons New School.

The Third Annual David Bowie B-Day Bash will happen from 5 to 11 pm on Sunday, January 8th. You can find LITM just steps away from the Grove Street PATH Station, at 140 Newark Ave., on the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. Admission is free. More info can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

Art, cocktails, and music on David Bowie’s birthday? It’s what the Thin White Duke would have wanted.
