One of the largest wholesale club stores in the country is officially coming to one of Bergen County’s busiest retail corridors as Costco has been greenlit to redevelop a large parcel.
During their October 2 meeting, the Paramus Planning Board approved an application from the company to bring a store to 859 Route 17 South. The property is home to a Stop & Shop store that shuttered back in 2022, leaving the building vacant ever since.

Costco’s plan is to demolish that structure in favor of a new 184,000-square-foot store, which will be the brand’s 21st location in the Garden State.
Costco is preparing to add its 21st membership warehouse club in New Jersey. Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza confirmed the news in a social media post that thanked the company for choosing to call Paramus home and filling an abandoned property.
“They’re keeping our commercial corridor vibrant, which helps the taxpayers, and they’re doing so with a plan to protect residents that are their neighbors as well,” DiPiazza said.
Costco has not responded to an inquiry Jersey Digs placed about a possible construction timeline for their Paramus store, which will be coming to a stretch of Route 17 that boasts tons of retail and restaurants, plus nearby malls that include the Garden State Plaza and Paramus Park.
