Mid-century modern furniture and design now has a retail home in Westwood. With an impressive selection of investment-grade furniture, decorations, and lighting, King-Hudson showcases handmade and rare pieces, plus a range of professional offerings, including restoration, consignment, and real estate staging. Owner Michelle King-Hudson has created a Bergen County mecca for the mid-century modern design aesthetic, which took off in the US after World War II. Its clean lines, organic shapes, rich wood tones and functionality are still popular today.
Located at 37 Westwood Avenue in Westwood, King-Hudson will offer a mid-century modern design research library, plus educational programming for both professionals and DIY hobbyists. Customers can sign up for a subscription-based membership package which includes access to its onsite library, plus discounts and early sign-ups for store happenings. The shop will host a variety of community events, including on-site art and design workshops.
Owner Michelle King-Hudson is a leading restoration expert and lifelong collector of mid-century modern furniture, lighting and decor with degrees in art and design and art history from the internationally acclaimed Savannah College of Art and Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art. King-Hudson is known for her expertise in restoring older homes, drawing on her background as a classically trained figurative painter as well as a wide-ranging career, including restoring murals, plaster walls and woodwork in centuries-old churches.
“King-Hudson was conceived to celebrate the lasting appeal of and demand for rare, high-end, mid-century modern furniture and its quality aesthetic,” offered owner Michelle King-Hudson. “Our furniture is either newly discovered in mint condition or restored to like-new. You will not find replica pieces here – our inventory is vintage.”
Some of the initial items on sale at King-Hudson include pieces by famed mid-century modern designers Mies Van de Rohe, Edward Wormly, Milo Baughman, John Hutton and Adrian Pearsall. There will also be vintage lighting by Robert Sonneman and Moss Lamps. Plus, the shop will showcase handmade and Amish quilts, original granny blankets, handblown Murano and Venetian glass, Russel Wright ceramic platters and vintage pottery.
“As a young child I went with my parents to auctions, and that set the foundation for my life-long love of collecting vintage items,” continued King-Hudson. “There is such beauty in mid-century modern that I am thrilled to share with the Bergen County community and well beyond.”
The Westwood showroom’s summer hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 7 p.m.
