A fast-casual Indian spot that has operated in New York City for over 24 years is crossing the Hudson River, as The Kati Roll Company will be bringing its restaurant to the Garden State for the first time.

The eatery was started by Payal Saha shortly after she moved from her hometown of Kolkata to New York City in 2002. Initially opening in Greenwich Village, The Kati Roll Company helped introduce New Yorkers to the authentic flavors of Kolkata Street food.

The company has since grown from a single restaurant into a brand with multiple locations throughout New York City, London, and Dallas. Their Jersey City outpost is slated to open July 1 at 924 Bergen Avenue, just a few blocks away from the Journal Square PATH station.

Perfected by Payal and Executive Chef Anil Bathwal over two decades, the menu is rooted in quality ingredients and fresh produce. All fillings are marinated daily, and pre-packed foods or sauces are never used, reflecting the founders’ belief that authenticity begins with the ingredients.

Signature rolls at the restaurant include their Achari Paneer Roll, filled with Indian farmer’s cheese marinated in Achari pickling spices, or their Unda Chicken Tikka Roll, layered with freshly beaten egg and chicken breast marinated in yogurt and spices.

The menu also features rice and salad bowls, including the Steak Rice Bowl with grilled Steak Tikka cubes over biryani rice or a Paneer Salad Bowl with grilled Achari Paneer cubes. All meals at The Kati Roll Company are served with spicy mashed potatoes, fresh salad with cilantro-lime dressing, white raita sauce, green chutney, and caramelized red onions.

The restaurant additionally serves house-made Alphonso Mango Lassis made with organic yogurt, as well as freshly made spicy potato chips. Like all of their locations, the upcoming Jersey City restaurant will feature a custom mural dedicated to the local community and its surroundings.

“I started this because I missed the ka rolls I grew up eating in Kolkata — I thought if I missed them this much, other people must too,” said Payal Saha, Founder of The Kati Roll Company. “New Jersey customers have been crossing the river to find us for years. It felt right to finally come to them.”

Outside of their Jersey City outpost, the restaurant hopes to open additional locations in New Jersey and on Long Island before the end of the year.
