One of the top Jersey Shore destinations is also one of the best small towns in the United States according to a recent analysis that gave Cape May high marks across the board.
Insure My Trip, a travel insurance company, recently released their rankings of the top 75 small towns in the country. The spots were judge by a variety of criteria that included the Global Peace Index, spaciousness using population density and census data, safety via the Crime Index, quality of hotels sourced from Booking.com, festivals, and cafe and restaurant ratings through Google.
Cape May, situated at Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway, nabbed the third highest ranking on Insure My Trip’s list. The study noted that they seaside city “boasts classic architecture and gorgeous vistas” while having “a small population of a little more than 1,000 residents.”
Cape May first emerged as a resort in the 19th century and has one of the largest collections of Victorian homes in the country alongside other landmarks like Congress Hall, a hotel that opened in 1816.
The city offers horse-drawn carriage rides for visitors to take in the architecture and boast other historic landmarks including the Cape May Point lighthouse and the Washington Street Mall.
The study also noted that cafes and restaurants in Cape May boasted high average ratings. An ample winery scene can be found just outside the city limits plus a plethora of craft breweries, wildlife areas, and several other pristine spots including Sunset Beach on the west side of the cape.
The top spot on Insure My Trip’s list went to Red Lodge, Montana. Cape May only spot in the Northeast included in the rankings, as most of the top small towns were found on or near the West Coast.
Not surprisingly, Cape May also made our list of the Best Beaches in New Jersey.
