The path has been cleared to bring a modern development to an industrial site in the shadow of the Bayonne Bridge that includes a slew of amenities while creating new retail space.
During a special meeting held earlier this year, Bayonne’s Planning Board signed off on an application to revitalize the former Caschem chemical plant site at 35 Avenue A. The plan, designed by West New York-based CPA Architecture, comes courtesy of The Gamal Group, a locally owned firm that holds a big stake in the area.
The company’s approved plan for the 1.15-acre site calls for two six-story buildings that will have a total of 299 residential apartments between them. The first structure, called subdistrict A, will sport 177 apartments. A bike room storage, a roof terrace, and a restaurant space spanning 4,667 square feet.
The second building, dubbed subdistrict B, will include the other 122 residences and a coffee shop on the ground floor. That portion will also include a roof terrace and the two buildings will be connected by an indoor pool across Gertrude Street.
The pair of buildings will sport a total of 16,433 square feet of amenity space and 224 spaces combined. Materials to be utilized on the development’s exterior include dark gray cementitious panels and wood planks.
While a construction timeline has not been announced for the project, the development is situated in a rapidly changing area. A new film production facility called 1888 Studios is slated for a property just down the road that had been a Texaco refinery before sitting vacant for decades.
The Gamal Group could have more in store for the area. The company also owns a sweeping portion of the Caschem property directly bordering the Hudson River.
