Downtown Jersey City residents could soon have one of their culinary dreams come true as a property along a major thoroughfare will soon serve a delicacy that is synonymous with the Big Apple yet locally hard to find.

Last week, a sign went up on a two-story house at 301 Grove Street heralding the imminent arrival of City Bagel & Deli. The home, which was built during the 1800s and has seen residential use, sports original wide-plank pine wood floors, several fireplaces, and a backyard patio.

Little is known about City Bagel & Deli; it seems as though they have not established a social media presence and a phone number or entity that owns the business isn’t apparent. It is unclear how the property will be revamped, but a construction permit has already been posted at the site.

The actual space at the property is substantial and should allow plenty of room for seating. The sign on the house trumpets “great bagels and good coffee – the best way to meet people,” suggesting that a dining area is included in the plans.

The news of City Bagel & Deli should be welcomed by locals as bagel shops in Jersey City, even in Downtown neighborhoods, can be shockingly hard to come by outside of Wonder Bagel. An opening date for the shop, other than “soon” as indicated on the sign, has not been verified.

The 301 Grove Street space had previously been slated to be the home of the now-defunct Broa after the Portuguese restaurant announced a plan to move there last January. While that deal fell through, the second time is hopefully the culinary charm for this historic house.
