Journal Square is getting a micro-housing project at 184-190 Academy Street. Designed by GRO Architects, the 6 story building will comprise 122 units averaging 220 square feet each. There is no car parking, instead, it’s been replaced with bike parking to promote a more transit oriented lifestyle.
The units will come pre-configured with flexible furniture to accommodate the small design.
As GRO explains, “The units themselves are custom designed to be highly efficient and flexible as a 24-hour life cycle is considered for the dwelling, allowing for living/dining and sleeping configurations, and multiple variations in between. Unique to the design is the organization of the unit into a wet zone and dry zone; entry into the unit is into the wet zone in which we have located a decentralized bathroom with separately enclosed shower and toilet room. The kitchen mediates between the wet zone and dry zone which comprises a desk, fold-down murphy style bed and coffee table that fits neatly below.”
Also, to compensate for the small dwelling units, the building features extensive common spaces including a lounge, cafe, gym, roof deck and laundry room.
The project received approval on 3/10/2015 and is in the planning/pre-construction phase.
