One of the businesses that will occupy an upcoming adaptive reuse project in Downtown Newark is no stranger to the neighborhood.
A 7-Eleven convenience store will take up one of the retail spaces at the William Flats redevelopment at 869-873 Broad Street, according to a listing from Pierson Commercial Real Estate. RealEstateNJ reported that the store is expected to open in early 2019.
Although 7-Eleven has long had a presence in Essex County, the convenience store chain has become ubiquitous in Newark and its suburbs in the last several years. In fact, just a few blocks away from 869 Broad Street, two 7-Eleven locations now sit a block away from each other.
The new store will join what is described by Pierson as a “national bank” on the first floor of this building, which was built 108 years ago as an Oppenheim Collins department store. In 1929, The New York Times wrote that the four-story structure was slated to be converted into offices and stores. The building continued to be used for those purposes for over 85 years until shortly after it was acquired for $5.475 million by 869 Broad, LLC. The company, an affiliate of Midtown Elizabeth-based Paramount Assets, is now in the process of turning the upper floors of the building into 37 apartments.
