More than five years after plans for a Burlington Coat Factory location in Downtown Newark came to light, new documents are providing additional details regarding the proposed department store.

Newark’s Burlington location is slated to come to the building at 729-737 Broad Street that is situated adjacent to the steps leading in and out of the Military Park light rail station.

Files released by the City of Newark show that interior and exterior renovations are planned for the structure and that the Burlington store would be in the basement. The entrance to the store would reportedly be at the corner of Broad Street and Raymond Boulevard.

An application submitted to Newark’s municipal government by Mikesell & Associates describes this as a $2 million project and notes that a Phenix Salon Suites location is planned for the building’s second floor.

Site plans show that four retail spaces are expected to come to the first floor, but the application states that there are “no specific tenants” for these spaces at this time.

Over the years, the building in question has been home to businesses such as Regines Super Store, Payless ShoeSource, and Dollar Bazaar. The Burlington plans for the premises surfaced in 2016.

Burlington, which is named for the eponymous city in South Jersey, already has a number of stores in the region, including locations in Clifton, Elizabeth, and Union.
