One of the Garden State’s premier coffee spots is thinking big for their next location as Paper Plane Coffee Co. will be opening inside a sprawling space in one of Essex County’s sought-after suburbs.
The Montclair-based coffee shop, known for their premium roasting and brewing methods, is often named as one of the best in the country on national lists. The Claremont Avenue shop, which started in Brooklyn before relocating to the Garden State in 2019, emphasizes sustainability and ethical sourcing as part of their ethos.
The next location for Paper Plane Coffee Co. will be massive, as they are taking over a former garage space in Maplewood at 145 Dunnell Road. The historic property, known as the Nelson’s Building among locals, spans over 7,000 square feet.

“We’re right next to our friends at Maplewood Mercantile and we’ve got a lot planned for this space,” the shop wrote in a social media post when announcing the expansion. “Coffee, community, and probably a few mild meltdowns along the way. But mostly coffee.”
The sheer size of the next version of Paper Plane Coffee Co. means they will be able to expand their menu and offerings a bit but the business notes that because the project is such a large undertaking, they anticipate opening the Maplewood space in phases over the coming months.
While an exact timeline for the launch of Paper Plane’s next location isn’t set in stone, they are hoping to have some portion of the shop up and running by the end of the summer. Those interested in following the progress can keep tabs on the journey on Instagram at the handle @paperplanecoffeeco.
