Lidl appears to be moving forward with plans to open another grocery store in Union County.

Property sales records show that Lidl US Operations, LLC of Arlington, Virginia, acquired 10 South Avenue in Garwood for $13 million. The sale by Miami-Dade County, Florida-based Gator Garwood Partners reportedly occurred on August 31, 2020.

Jersey Digs first reported more than a year and a half ago that a Lidl location could come to this space in Garwood. At the time, the property was being promoted by Gator Investments as part of a plan for renovations at “Garwood Center.”

Between 2015 and 2017, the property at 10 South Avenue near the Cranford municipal limits contained Pathmark, The Food Emporium, and finally SuperFresh’s Garwood Farmers Market before becoming vacant. ShopRite and Kings Food Market currently operate elsewhere in the borough.

Lidl, which has its main offices in Neckarsulm, Germany, opened a store in Union Township in 2018. Aldi, the chain’s main competitor both in the United States and internationally, currently has three Union County locations.
