Another major retailer is plotting a presence in the Mile Square City as the Manhattan-born brand Kiehl’s has their sights set on a Hoboken storefront.
The company, which dates to 1851, has applied to bring their skincare products and more to the ground floor of 133 Washington Street. Formerly home to a closed T-Mobile store, Kiehl’s has a signage application that is scheduled to be heard by the city’s Historic Preservation Commission during their August 4 meeting.
Kiehl’s began as a traditional apothecary in New York City’s East Village that was originally known as Brunswick Apotheke before it was purchased by John Kiehl in the 1890s. The shop specialized in homeopathic remedies, herbal tinctures, and essential oils before it was in vogue, a legacy that continues to this day.

Kiehl’s emphasizes the use of responsibly sourced ingredients in their products and has launched a few environmental initiatives in recent years via their My Kiehl’s Rewards program. One of them, the Recycle and Be Rewarded program, encourages customers to return empty containers for store credit.
The potential Kiehl’s outpost in Hoboken would be just their second in New Jersey, following a location at Garden State Plaza in Paramus. The company would join other beauty brands like Sephora and Bluemercury that have opened in Hoboken in recent years.
