Jersey City Mayor James Solomon is looking for a Director of Housing Preservation. This senior housing enforcement role is posted on the all-new Jersey Digs Job Board. This critical position oversees a team of roughly 25 people responsible for housing regulations and tenant protections in one of the most densely populated cities in the US.
Housing stability is one of the most important issues facing Jersey City. Skyrocketing rents, population growth, and robust redevelopment all add pressure to a city that has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last few decades. The Director plays a key role in shaping the future of Jersey City.
The Director is responsible for enforcing rent control, housing codes, and short-term rental rules, protecting residents from unsafe conditions and unlawful rent increases. The department also maintains oversight of vacant and abandoned properties as well as lead paint remediation. The role encompasses everything from affordability to public health. On top of that, the Director leads a team responsible for inspections, hearings, and compliance, and advises the mayor and works with the City Council on housing policy.
All candidates must have 5 years of relevant experience in urban planning, tenant protection, housing code enforcement, housing regulation, land use, or a closely related municipal or nonprofit field, with leadership responsibilities. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required, with advanced degrees preferred. The job is a Civil Service role, so the hire must pass the required exam. The salary range is $103,000 to $145,000 with a full benefits package.
