A public building that sits in the shadow of new development at the edge of Union Center could be torn down to make way for a new residential project.

The Township of Union Senior Center at 968 Bonnel Court near the existing phase of the Centurion Union Center complex is the focus of demolition and redevelopment plans by a firm that is looking to construct a new five-story building.

Centurion Union 968 Bonnel Court Urban Renewal, LLC has plans for 85 apartments, public and private parking, a coffee bar and fitness room, an outdoor terrace, and an outdoor dog run, according to a notice of hearing. There would be a mixture of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units within the development.

In order to move forward with the proposal, the developer is seeking preliminary and final site plan approval from the Union Township Planning Board.

“If approved, the Township will transfer the Property to the Applicant and the Proposed Building will be constructed as part of the ‘Centurion Union Center’ phased development that was previously approved by the Planning Board,” the notice says.

A virtual public hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, August 26, at 7:00 p.m.

As Jersey Digs reported in 2020, despite being two miles from the township’s sole train station, Union Center has already seen a significant increase in development for a business district of its size. The community, which includes several small businesses, is served by several bus lines and is close to Route 22 and the Garden State Parkway.

Note to readers: The dates that applications are scheduled to be heard by the Union Township Planning Board and other commissions are subject to change.
