The team behind an Irish restaurant that quickly became a hit on Hoboken’s 1st Street is planning their next endeavor near the city’s train station, as a new eatery called Anam is coming to Newark Street.
During their August 3 meeting, Hoboken’s Historical Preservation Committee heard a signage application for 36-42 Newark Street. The property has undergone many tenant changes in recent years since the revamped Clam Broth House closed in the mid 2010s.
The large space was taken over by Biggie’s Clam Bar before that business left town, then by Monroe’s Cocktail Bar, then by the Latin-influenced Panela, and finally by Perico Speakeasy. The space has been dark since those businesses closed last year.

A new business called Anam is now in the works for the ground floor, which spans about 5,600 square feet of the space. The application was filed by Darragh McConnon, who co-owns Dear Maud and a slew of other restaurants in the area.
McConnon most recently opened Revival at 161 Ludlow Street in Manhattan and also owns Jackdaw in New York City. Dear Maud recently celebrated their fourth year in business earlier in 2026.

While details of the new restaurant are scarce, Anam is Gaelic for “souls,” and the eatery seems likely to continue the Irish-themed vibes of the group’s other businesses. Renderings of the project show an exterior refresh that utilizes orange hues along with some outdoor seating along Newark Street.
In addition to the signage application, a company named Pilgrim Souls Anam LLC has already been registered at 36 Newark Street. A potential opening timeline for Anam has not been announced, as the restaurant is still in the planning stages.
