The Toms River Community Medical Center, part of RWJBarnabas Health, has received approval for a 444,000-square-foot addition from the Township Planning Board. The project is the second phase of a four-phase expansion plan.
Operating at its present 41.5-acre location on Route 37 since the early 1960s, the hospital and health care facility will build the six-story addition on three acres adjoining the hospital, according to plans the Township approved on April 15.
The expansion is a permitted use in the Township Hospital-Medical Service zone. In 2022, the Planning Board approved the hospital’s general development plan. The addition approved in April is the second phase of a four-phase plan.

“Community Medical Center is committed to providing the highest level of care to the communities we serve. We are excited to enhance and expand our campus to better serve the families and communities that rely on our facilities,” Robert Cavanaugh, RWJBarnabas Health director of marketing and communications, told Jersey Digs in a statement. “We have completed the first phase of the master facility plan, which included the recent completion of the new parking garage.”
HDR Inc. of Pennington is the architect, and Langan Engineering and Environmental Services Inc. of Parisppany is providing engineering services for the addition.
Outpatient clinics, a cafeteria, patient rooms, and surgery services are included in the addition, according to the plans.
