Jersey City’s own Lincoln Park will be undergoing some expensive changes. Hudson County has initiated a $6.7 million project to renovate an old fountain within the park. Capital improvement funds are being used to pay for the project and it is estimated to take a year to complete.
The fountain is the work of sculptor Pierre J. Cheron and was once touted as the largest concrete fountain in the world. Completed in 1911, It is 53 feet high and 108 feet in diameter, and is decorated with water-spouting frogs, allegorical figures, and surrounded by planters. It was restored by the county and rededicated on July 10, 1990.
The renovation work will include preservation and restoration work. Specifically, replacing the fountains entire plumbing system, upgrading the material of the floor and walls, and renovation of the fountain’s tall central structure.
