A southern fast-food chain known for their sliders is making their first foray into New Jersey via a famed New York Giants receiver as Krystal has launched in Union.

The Tennessee-based restaurant, founded in 1932 as the South’s answer to White Castle, recently opened its newest spot at 2210 Route 22. The initial Garden State outpost is backed by Paterson native Victor Cruz, who starred for the Giants during their 2012 Super Bowl Championship season.

Cruz is expected to develop up to five locations in the region as part of a broader franchise agreement with Krystal, which is known for their sliders that have steamed buns, freshly griddled beef, diced onions, yellow mustard, and a pickle.

The restaurant’s “hangover krystal” adds an egg and crispy bacon to the festivities, while Krystal’s early hours menu features legit breakfast options that include a sausage gravy biscuit, mini waffles, and bacon, egg, and cheese wraps.

In a nod to Cruz’s roots, the Union location introduces both regionally inspired and Latin items like a pork roll slider and a tres leche shake. Other popular dishes on the menu include hot dogs, wings, fried chicken sandwiches, tater tots, and onion rings.

Krystal operates about 270 locations nationwide, with their Union outpost being the first in the Northeast. The hours for their Garden State restaurant run very early and late, spanning from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
