A Garden State institution is set to re-launch following a multimillion-dollar renovation as Black Horse Tavern & Pub in Mendham is opening today with more to come at the property.
The eatery, owned and operated by 40North Restaurant Group, is situated at 1 West Main Street inside a historic stagecoach house that dates to the 1700s. The Black Horse has been designated as New Jersey’s oldest continuously running restaurant, first opening in 1742.
The substantial renovation further accents the charm, history and culinary experience at the classic pub portion of the restaurant, which will be getting a further facelift. An additional renovation will include The Black Horse’s other on-property space in the coming months, which is traditionally referred to as The Tavern.
“The Black Horse holds a special place in the hearts of so many,” says 40North Restaurant Group Vice President Kevin Felice. “We’ve approached this renovation with great care, respecting its timeless charm and preserving the memories that make it beloved. At the same time, we’re excited to welcome guests into a refreshed space where providing seamless hospitality is our number one goal.”
Executive Chef Dan Zappula’s menu keeps classic favorites The Black Horse is known for like their pot pit, chicken wings, and crab cakes, but the restaurant will be introducing new dishes that include housemade pastas, bronzini, and a dry-aged NY strip steak as part of their revamp.
Both their lunch and dinner menus will be complimented by a curated wine and cocktail list inspired by the historic space that include a reconstructed Old Fashioned, a 1742 Manhattan, or a Pretty Pickle. The Black Horse will also offer non-alcoholic mocktails at their revamped space, which opens today for lunch walk-ins.
Reservations for dinner are now open on RESY and The Black Horse will also be open for brunch service on both Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. through 4 p.m.
