A sign reading “open” remains on one of the windows of the building at 52 Westfield Avenue in Clark. Now, a new proposal has surfaced to bring a mixed-use development to the site.

Clark Broadway Associates is looking to receive preliminary and final site plan approval in order to construct an “inclusionary” four-story project, according to a notice of hearing. The building would reportedly include 75 residential units, retail space, and parking.

The property is located at the eastern edge of Clark near the Rahway line and once contained a Merit Foodtown supermarket.

NJ Advance Media reported in 2018 that the Township of Clark was considering eminent domain in order to take over the tract while a Union County LocalSource article later that year stated that the premises were under contract at the time and that a 52-unit development was in the works.

Property records indicate that the site was sold for $3.6 million in 2019 and that Clark Broadway Associates, LLC is the current owner.

Few additional details have been announced yet about the current plans, but more information is expected to be released when the Clark Planning Board holds a public hearing regarding Clark Broadway Associates, LLC’s application. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Clark Municipal Court.

Note to readers: The dates that applications are scheduled to be heard by the Clark Planning Board and other commissions are subject to change.
