A nonprofit that educates children with autism and developmental disabilities plans to add a 55,205-square-foot private elementary school to its Mount Laurel, Burlington County, campus.

In October, the Township Planning Board approved Bancroft NeuroHealth’s preliminary and final major site plan.

The school would house a projected 160 students ages 3 to 11 and 188 staff members at 311 Walton Avenue on Bancroft’s 80-acre campus. The building site is now a lawn.

The school is scheduled to open in 2028.

Bancroft, which is based in Cherry Hill, won approval for its Mount Laurel campus in 2016.

A possible future expansion may occur in the southwest part of the campus, but Bancroft’s Planning Board application provided no details.

Bancroft was founded in 1883 by Philadelphia schoolteacher Margaret Bancroft as one of the nation’s first private schools for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to its history.

In 2024-25, Bancroft had total revenue of nearly $287 million and expenses of $271 million, according to its Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service. Its assets totaled $245 million at year-end. Each year, it serves 2,200 individuals.

In addition to Mount Laurel and Cherry Hill, Bancroft has locations in Moorestown, Mountainside, Voorhees, Woodstown, Swedesboro, Burlington, Toms River, and Plainsboro.
