This historic, character-filled home has an unusual past. Once a neighborhood place of worship, it now functions as a 4-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom residence since its full-scale residential conversion.

The building was originally completed in 1925, designed by New York City architect Bernhardt E. Muller. Known for his mastery of revivalist architecture, Muller brought a rare English cottage-inspired approach to this project. He used steep rooflines, textured surfaces, and a modest scale, which was unusual for religious construction from that time period. This gave the church a distinct visual identity, setting it apart from Gothic and Colonial designs.

Haddon Heights is a Camden County borough recognized for its walkable streets and concentration of historic homes. The property sits near the town center, close to independent shops, restaurants, and several public parks. With major roadways nearby, Philadelphia is accessible in under 20 minutes, making the location ideal for those seeking small-town living with metropolitan access.

For over 90 years, the building functioned as the First Church of Christ, Scientist. In 2018, it underwent a complete, reimagined renovation, transitioning from a place of worship to a private home. The work required significant reconfiguration of interior spaces to suit residential needs while ensuring the preservation of defining architectural elements.

From the street, the façade appears much as it did when it was originally built. Stone and stucco walls, sharply pitched gables, and the central entry remain intact. Tall arched windows, some with stained glass, continue to be a defining element of the space and provide crystalline light to the main living areas.

A lot of the original craftsmanship from the 1920s remains. Stained-glass windows, exposed wood beams, and decorative plaster details have been retained and restored. Vaulted ceilings give the main space an open feel, while reclaimed wood creates continuity with the building’s history. These features are complemented by modern materials, chosen for their durability and clean lines. This careful combination allows the old and new to work together without visual conflict.

The grounds have been fully developed with countless amenities to enhance outdoor living. A private lazy river curves through the backyard, accompanied by a covered cabana with a full kitchen and grill. A three-car garage includes its own full bath, expanding the functional use of the property for hosting and beyond.

Modern upgrades extend beyond the exterior. The renovation introduced a custom chef’s kitchen, radiant heat floors, updated bathrooms, and high-efficiency climate systems. Together, these features bring present-day convenience to a building that remains deeply tied to its nearly century-old origins.
