One of South Jersey’s larger cities will be gaining a new research center as construction has officially begun on a major investment in Camden.
Governor Phil Murphy and other dignitaries recently held a groundbreaking to mark the beginning of work on the $95 million Coriell Institute Strategic Innovation Center. The project, announced by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) earlier this year, will serve as the Coriell Institute’s new headquarters, research center and biorepository.

The endeavor is a partnership between the Coriell Institute and the NJEDA that aims to spur biotech innovation and expand New Jersey’s leadership in the life sciences sector. The center will also house six National Institutes of Health biobanks.
The facility will additionally feature state-of-the-art incubator and laboratory spaces for emerging biotech companies. It will essentially replace Coriell’s current space on Haddon Avenue in Camden, which they moved into back in 1989.
The project is expected to create approximately 150 new permanent jobs plus 100 construction jobs, according to the NJEDA. The new building will be located on the 1300 block of Walnut Street and is expected to open in early 2028.
