New Jersey’s only remaining location of a Mid-Atlantic sneaker store chain could soon have to relocate if a plan to redevelop its property continues to move forward.
The building at 530 52nd Street in West New York that contains The $29.99 Tennis Shoes Wearhouse is the site of a proposed residential development. A legal notice from the West New York Zoning Board of Adjustment shows that the committee was scheduled to hear plans last month for the first time in connection with a five-story building that could rise on the premises. If approved, the structure would contain 24 units on the top four floors. The ground floor level of the development would be used for parking, with 22 spaces provided for residents.
Amir Elsherbini of West New York Luxury, LLC is listed in the notice as the developer. The Hillsborough Township, Somerset County-based company is seeking variances such as use, lot area, building height, and parking in connection with the project’s application.
The $29.99 Tennis Shoes Wearhouse has operated on 52nd Street for at least a decade. In addition to West New York, the Newark-based chain has locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Their only other New Jersey location was in Clifton, but that store closed its doors in 2012.
This part of 52nd Street connects two major thoroughfares, Bergenline Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and is situated just a few minutes north of the Bergenline Avenue Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station. Should it be approved, the project would be one of several new buildings along the 52nd Street corridor, which has seen an increasing development presence in recent years. Projects such as The West Hudson, the Digambar Jain Temple, and the 52nd Street Homes have all been completed on this block over the past 10 years.
