Military veterans with disabilities could soon have more affordable housing options in Bergen County, where a project to build six apartments is receiving additional funding.

The Bergen County Board of Commissioners approved another $200,000 for the development at 109 Cedar Hill Road in Mahwah on Wednesday, Oct. 7, bringing the project’s total county funding authorization to $450,000.

The apartments are intended to help veterans with disabilities find affordable housing, though the final eligibility requirements have not yet been confirmed. Nouvelle Main Street Urban Renewal LLC is developing the project and requested more funding after construction costs increased.

The six apartments are part of Mahwah’s ongoing efforts to create more affordable housing in the township.

Township documents describe the development as affordable rental housing with a preference for veterans. Mahwah’s May 2026 municipal newsletter described the project as housing dedicated to households with disabled veterans.

Nouvelle is working with Mahwah Township, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson and the New Jersey SOS Veterans Stakeholders Group on the development.

The project reached a milestone on May 5, when local officials, veterans advocates, and development representatives gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony. Mahwah Mayor Jim Wysocki and several Township Council members attended, along with state Assemblyman Robert Auth.

Although the groundbreaking marked progress, rising construction costs led the developer to seek more financial assistance. In January, Mahwah officials supported increasing the project’s request for federal HOME funding from $250,000 to $450,000.

The federal program helps communities develop affordable housing for people and families who meet income requirements.

Mahwah officials cited higher construction expenses as the reason for the additional $200,000 request. The township also said its support would not require additional money from local taxpayers.

The county’s latest approval provides the additional funding authorization to help cover those costs.

The apartments will be located on Cedar Hill Road, where Mahwah has been working to expand housing opportunities for residents with limited incomes. Plans also call for a separate four-bedroom group home at nearby 111 Cedar Hill Road. That project is not part of the six-apartment veterans housing development.

The Mahwah project comes as New Jersey continues efforts to help veterans find stable housing. The state’s Bringing Veterans Home initiative, launched in January 2025, has helped more than 2,000 veterans obtain permanent housing, according to the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.  The statewide initiative helps veterans experiencing homelessness find permanent housing.

The six apartments planned in Mahwah are a smaller, local effort to expand affordable housing opportunities for veterans with disabilities.

Questions remain about when the apartments will be ready and how interested veterans will apply.

Officials have not announced a confirmed completion date, rental rates, or when applications will open.

Officials also have not confirmed the final eligibility requirements, including whether applicants will need to meet any residency restrictions.

For now, the additional $200,000 brings the development another step closer to providing affordable housing for veterans who have served their country.
