A historic home situated just a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean is wrapping up a year-long renovation that preserved intricate details while adding modern amenities, including a pool.

The oldest house in Asbury Park sits at 402 Fifth Avenue, directly across the street from Sunset Lake. The home, built in the 1880s, was a four-room wood-frame home that was likely first constructed as a summer cottage.

The house had an addition tacked on in 1886, but had otherwise been modified very little since it was first built. The home was purchased several years ago by Saxony Investments, an experienced home renovation company run by a young couple.
The previous owner told The Coaster that before World War II, the home was a Bed and Breakfast before being converted into efficiency apartments named “Lake Terrace.”

The project was spearheaded by design-build expert Robert Feinstein, who is the Director of Design at Studio One Architects and founder of Allgood Builders. Feinstein and Saxony recognized the potential of the home beneath the layers of neglect, which took six dumpsters just to clear out the remnants of the home’s past.

Tax records from Asbury Park indicated that the home was a six-unit building, but it was decided to convert the property into a large one-family home. The extensive renovation involved gutting the original structure down to the studs, installing new mechanical systems, rebuilding the home’s columns, and adding a new two-story addition.

The result is a six-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home that features a new in-ground pool in the backyard. While the home featured modern amenities, two historic fireplaces were kept as part of the renovation, and bluestone that is over 150 years old was reused on the project.

Highlights of the project include a master suite with a large walk-in closet, a wet shower area, custom millwork, handmade tiles, and a private terrace area. The kitchen at the home sports a 14-foot island, while the front entrance to the home received a new driveway, walkway, and fresh landscaping.

402 5th Avenue hopes to set a new standard for Asbury Park’s real estate scene while maintaining a piece of the city’s history. The home recently wrapped up its renovation and is now listed for sale.
