A new development is coming to Jersey City’s waterfront Newport neighborhood, but aside from its name, very few details have been revealed.

Midtown Manhattan-based LeFrak, which is largely responsible for building this mixed-use community along the Hudson where the Pavonia Terminal once stood, is planning a new project called “The Wave.” Although no documents with the name “The Wave” have been released yet, sources state that this proposal involves the long undeveloped northeast quadrant at Newport.

However, it is not clear if this project is the same as the proposed 338-unit mixed-use complex that we first reported on last year or a different development that is being planned nearby on the premises. The previously proposed project is designed by HLW International for 700 Washington Boulevard and calls for a 24-story tower, a 12-story building, and a five-story structure in between. 16,490 square feet of commercial space would be included inside.

We reached out to LeFrak to find out exactly what “The Wave” will consist of, but spokesperson Isabel Schwab stated that “it’s still pretty preliminary” and that “we actually haven’t announced any details about that yet.”

The northeast quadrant site, which was offered as a possible location for Amazon’s second headquarters if Jersey City were selected, consists of a mixture of vacant property and an Eastern Concrete Materials facility. It is situated between Eighteenth Street and the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. However, work recently began on the premises and the property was set to be subdivided.

We contacted Eastern Concrete Materials to learn more about the property’s future, but our request for comment was not returned.

LeFrak has been working on a number of projects in Jersey City in recent years, including Ellipse and a proposed 258-unit complex slightly farther inland at 854 Jersey Avenue and 659 Grove Street. Jersey Digs will continue to investigate this upcoming development and keep you updated as more information is revealed.
