An old bodega at 34 Coles Street has officially been transformed into Jersey City’s newest French spot, and Downtown’s newest café comes courtesy of an owner with New York City bakery experience.

Café Madelaine announced their imminent arrival in Jersey City this year in the spring courtesy of a banner that sprouted up at the property, and the eatery opened for business earlier this week. The venture comes from Anne Dufour, who was one of the co-owners of the now-closed French Café Gourmand that was located in Lower Manhattan.

Her freshly renovated 1,700-square-foot space, at the intersection of Coles and 2nd Streets, opens early at 7:30 a.m. and serves both hot and cold coffee beverages for those on-the-go, ranging from the basics like café au lait to more unique options like a matcha latte.

For those who wish to stay awhile at Café Madelaine, they will find a warm, welcoming space that serves breakfast and lunch options at cozy tables. Portraits of France, wooden tables, and a minimalist design keep it simple but effective, creating a tranquil atmosphere at a storefront that’s just off the beaten path enough to keep it relaxed.

The breakfast portion of the menu currently features homemade quiches, pancakes, eggs benedict, or avocado toast, while their lunch choices include items like French-inspired sandwiches or a croque monsieur or madame. Café Madelaine also features some baked treats like croissants and other tasty dessert options including tiramisu, cheesecake, crème brûlée, and several tarts.

The restaurant’s menu will rotate on a regular basis, and those looking for al fresco dining during the warm summer months can take advantage of some outdoor seating that’s available at the newly-opened café.
