Walker House

540 Broad Street, Newark, NJ

Building details

Walker House is a 264-unit mixed-income residential conversion of the historic 21-story Art Deco tower at 540 Broad Street in downtown Newark, NJ, originally built in 1929 as the headquarters for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company and designed by renowned architect Ralph Thomas Walker. The adaptive reuse project, developed by L+M Development Partners in partnership with Prudential Financial and Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group, opened in 2019 following an extensive restoration of the landmark building, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The 440,000-square-foot building offers 211 market-rate and 53 affordable apartments ranging from studios to three bedrooms, along with office space and ground-floor retail. Amenities include a rooftop terrace with BBQ areas, fitness and yoga center, library lounge, game room, and a 24-hour attended lobby restored to honor its original Art Deco grandeur.
