The Ballantine
80 Freeman Street, Newark, NJ
Building details
The Ballantine is a 280-unit luxury rental building located at 80 Freeman Street in Newark's historic Ironbound District, developed by Shorewood Real Estate Group in partnership with Bridge Investment Group at a cost of $88 million. Built on the site of the former Ballantine Brewery — one of the oldest beer brands in the United States, established in 1840 and closed since 1972 — the six-story building honors that industrial legacy through its design. Leasing began in spring 2025 and the complex spans 310,522 square feet with 246 market-rate units and 34 affordable units, plus 2,600 square feet of ground-floor retail and 125 underground parking spaces. Residences feature nine-foot ceilings, wide-plank flooring, and in-unit washers and dryers. A Phase Two is planned to add 400 additional apartments and a 50,000-square-foot grocery store.
